WORK EXPERIENCE

Independent Consultant (June 2006 - Present)

Works with small and large companies to define, design, build, evaluate and/or refine their devices, websites and software applications. Clients include Current.com, Dash Navigation, DreamWorks, Plantronics, Sonos and Webex. Prefers to work alongside internal teams.

San Jose State University (Spring Semester, 2005 - Present)

•   Part Time Faculty Member

Class in Interactive & Interface Design offered to Industrial Design undergraduate and HCI graduate students. Responsible for creation of syllabus and instruction.

Yahoo! Inc. (March 2005 – June 2006)

•    Principal Designer, Search Group

Responsible for leading innovation design and specification activities for Yahoo! search products. Worked closely with design research, engineering and product management to create new products and services.

In addition to general activities, defined and delivered highly dynamic search experience for helping consumers rapidly formulate queries and find relevant results.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada (2004 & 2009)

Conducted a one week Prototyping and Interaction Design Workshop with PhD students in the Sensory Perception and Interaction Research Group (part of the Computer Science Department).

Interval Research Corporation (July 1996 – March 2005)

Originally a research lab developing new technology, Interval became a development arm of Paul Allen’s Vulcan, Inc., producing internet based communication technologies.

Head of User Experience (May 2000 – March 2005)

Responsible for all aspects of the user experience including UI design, website, help documentation, customer support and corporate identity, but also general company management.

Produced user friendly videophone and telephony software for PCs and set top boxes. Freely available online, our unpublicized Videophone PC software received very positive feedback for usability and performance by consumers and businesses alike (prior to the advent of Skype).

Interim Program Manager (February – May 2001)

In addition to running user experience design activities, coordinated the software engineering effort and was the primary liaison with partner company Digeo, until a permanent program manager was hired.

Project Manager for Advanced Development project (1999)

Led a project to commercialize physical interaction technologies in partnership (JDA) with a Fortune 500 company. Pioneered a novel prototyping strategy that enables earlier product concept evaluation with consumers. Delivered two product concepts before the year end (and under budget).

Responsibilities included product development strategy, design, liaison with partner company and IP protection.

    Researcher (1997 - 1998)

Participated in a media-space project developing concepts for novel social communication products for consumer markets (included remote mood and presence awareness). Also utilized haptic, RFID and other technologies to prototype alternative device control (UI) methods and behaviors. Projects resulted in four patent applications (see Patent section).

Prototyping involved fabrication, microprocessor programming, and basic electronic circuit design.

Product Design Lead for Advanced Development project (July 1996 - 1997)

Designed simple user interface for consumer email appliance. Responsible for design (UI and industrial) and usability aspects of product development.
